One night, hours into the nightly broadcast of the radio true crime show True For You, hosts Marty and Andrea get a mysterious phone call. Someone with a disguised voice tells them they have an exclusive story for them about a missing persons case that was never solved. It goes something like this:
Ben Miller has a problem. He's in his final year of university with nothing to show for it. His true crime podcast only has a handful of listeners and he's starting to lose hope. His only true supporter is his best friend (and not-so secret crush) Janie, a drama student with aspirations of becoming an actress.
While complaining to his roommate Ezra, he's hit with the reality that the most successful podcasts have some sort of exclusive when it comes to the story they tell. Later, at a party Ben has an idea. He asks Janie if she will become a “missing person” so he can document finding her on the podcast. To Ben's surprise, she agrees. Little does Ben know, his one act of deception will set off a dangerous chain reaction and spin a story that Ben isn't sure he's ready to tell.
